| Abstract: | A legged mobile robot possesses degrees of freedom which are provided at roll, pitch, and yaw axes at a trunk. By using these degrees of freedom which are provided at the trunk, the robot can smoothly get up from any fallen-down posture. In addition, by reducing the required torque and load on movable portions other than the trunk, and by spreading/averaging out the load between each of the movable portions, concentration of a load on a particular member is prevented from occurring. As a result, the robot is operated more reliably, and energy is used with greater efficiency during a getting-up operation. The invention makes it possible for the robot to independently, reliably, and smoothly get up from various fallen-down postures such as a lying-on-the-face posture, a lying-on-the-back posture, and a lying sideways posture. |

| Abstract: | A supervisory safety-control system is implemented by dividing a mine's territory into zones of free operation ("permission zones") wherein a vehicle is allowed to move according to predetermined permission parameters but unhindered by other system constraints. Traffic of autonomous vehicles in each permission zone is controlled by the supervisory system in conjunction with and in addition to conventional safety constraints associated with the guidance system that effects the vehicle's tracking of predetermined trajectories. Permission zones are assigned and activated using criteria that ensure the vehicle will remain entirely within active zones so long as the vehicle acts within such predetermined permission parameters. Each permission zone is also associated with a maximum velocity profile that overrides guidance-system safety controls, if necessary, and ensures stoppage of the vehicle at the end of the permission zone. |

| Application Number: | 10/228,248 |
| Abstract: | Agricultural operations by applying flexible manufacturing software, robotics and sensing techniques to agriculture. In manufacturing operations utilizing flexible machining and flexible assembly robots, work pieces flow through a fixed set of workstations on an assembly line. At different stations are located machine vision systems, laser based raster devices, radar, touch, photocell, and other methods of sensing; flexible robot armatures and the like are used to operate on them. This flexible agricultural automation turns that concept inside out, moving software programmable workstations through farm fields on mobile robots that can sense their environment and respond to it flexibly. The agricultural automation will make it possible for large scale farming to take up labor intensive farming practices which are currently only practical for small scale farming, improving land utilization efficiency, while lowering manpower costs dramatically. |

| Abstract: | The invention is a multifunctional, mobile appliance capable of performing a variety of tasks safely, quietly, without pollution, and out of sight of its owner. Such tasks might include lawn mowing, fertilizing, and edging, floor vacuuming, waxing, and polishing, or rug shampooing. In its preferred implementation, the mobile unit 1 would obtain precise real time and position information using the Real Time Kinematic Global Positioning System. The user initially guides the appliance around the work-area perimeters. The device then uses this information to determine the full working area. Proximity detectors and impact sensors help the appliance avoid unexpected obstacles. The device is quiet enough to perform its task in the middle of the night while its owner is asleep, but can be programmed to work continuously or during any user-specified time interval. The small turning radius of the appliance allows it to follow intricate perimeters. |

| Application Number: | 09/849,894 |
| Abstract: | Disclosed is a method for establishing and utilizing electronic tracks on roads for ground vehicles so as to ease the driving task with added safety and efficiency. Electronic tracks define traces on roads guiding the movement of a ground vehicle in as much as the same way that railroad tracks confine the movement of a train. Speed control can be achieved by using equipments detecting the driving conditions and the road environment along with the gliding action of the ground vehicle on electronic tracks. Automation in driving is thus possible, at least partially. Electronic map can be constructed consisting of many of the electronic tracks. Based upon both the static and dynamic information on roads, an electronic map is able to configure an optimal route connecting two addresses with the shortest time in traveling. |

| Abstract: | A communications system for determining the position and velocity of an object using a plurality of GPS signals transmitted by a plurality of GPS sources includes an interrogator remote from the object and responsive to the plurality of GPS signals. The interrogator transmits an RF signal including GPS source information and at least one of frequency information and time and code phase information of at least one of the GPS signals. The system also includes a transponder positioned on the object and responsive to the RF signal and the plurality of GPS signals. The transponder tracks one of the plurality of GPS signals in response to the GPS source information and the frequency information and time and code phase information. The transponder generates a correlation snapshot and transmits the snapshot to the interrogator. The snapshot includes a sampled coarse acquisition (C/A) code between the one of the plurality of GPS signals and a replica of the one of the plurality of GPS signals generated by the transponder at regular offsets of some fraction of a C/A code chip. The interrogator processes the correlation snapshot to determine the position and velocity of the transponder. |

| Inventor(s): | Ruffner, Bryan John (Annandale, VA) |
| Application Number: | 09/351,510 |
In the instance of a mowing application, the cutting blades are surrounded by a cage that allows grass to enter, but excludes sticks, stones, fingers or toes. The mowing blade assembly can trim over the top of yard edging. The battery-powered device can recharge itself and a wireless link enables the appliance to communicate with its user and a user support network via the World Wide Web. |

| Abstract: | GPS satellite (4) ranging signals (6) received (32) on comm1, and DGPS auxiliary range correction signals and pseudolite carrier phase ambiguity resolution signals (8) from a fixed known earth base station (10) received (34) on comm2, at one of a plurality of vehicles/aircraft/automobiles (2) are computer processed (36) to continuously determine the one's kinematic tracking position on a pathway (14) with centimeter accuracy. That GPS-based position is communicated with selected other status information to each other one of the plurality of vehicles (2), to the one station (10), and/or to one of a plurality of control centers (16), and the one vehicle receives therefrom each of the others' status information and kinematic tracking position. Objects (22) are detected from all directions (300) by multiple supplemental mechanisms, e.g., video (54), radar/lidar (56), laser and optical scanners. Data and information are computer processed and analyzed (50,52,200,452) in neural networks (132, FIGS. 6-8) in the one vehicle to identify, rank, and evaluate collision hazards/objects, an expert operating response to which is determined in a fuzzy logic associative memory (484) which generates control signals which actuate a plurality of control systems of the one vehicle in a coordinated manner to maneuver it laterally and longitudinally to avoid each collision hazard, or, for motor vehicles, when a collision is unavoidable, to minimize injury or damage therefrom. The operator is warned by a heads up display and other modes and may override. An automotive auto-pilot mode is provided. |

| Abstract: | In driving a motor vehicle in accordance with a control plan, the influence of the inclination of a road is recognized so as to realize an accurate control. The position and speed of a vehicle after a predetermined time period as estimated on the basis of the detection of magnetic nails, are estimated by a first processing portion, while the control plan of the vehicle (the correlation between the position and speed of the vehicle) is determined by a control plan processing portion on the basis of information received from a leakage coaxial cable. The deviations between the control plan and the estimated position and speed of the vehicle are calculated, and these deviations are further multiplied by gains Kx and Ku in a control plan converting portion so as to calculate a target acceleration. A throttle and a brake are controlled on the basis of the target acceleration, whereby the vehicle is driven in conformity with the controls. A correction device corrects the target acceleration in order to eliminate the influence of the inclination of a road. |

| Abstract: | Method suitable for optimizing an operation of a self-guided vehicle. The method includes steps for incorporating a self-guided capability as part of the operation of the vehicle, the operation further including a mapping technique for soliciting information required for vehicle motion from a first to a second predetermined location. The method then requires dynamically assessing a global optimal path referenced to the first and second locations, and dynamically affecting vehicle motion, by actions premised upon re-evaluating the global optimal path in light of instantaneous vehicle motion, by refining the global optical path so that the vehicle can follow a localized path trajectory which optimizes the refined global path. |

| Abstract: | The operational fitness of a magnetic sensor for detecting buried magnets can be tested from time to time by an electromagnet installed in proximity to the sensor. The electromagnet is a small coil of wire mounted near the sensor, such as a Hall effect device, which when energized, generates a test magnetic field. The analog output of the sensor is compared with preestablished values when the electromagnet is energized to verify the proper operation of the sensor; it is also compared with preestablished values when sensing buried magnets to confirm operation of the sensor, the strength of the buried magnet, and the alignment of the sensor with respect to the magnet. A threshold detector senses the output of the sensor to indicate when a magnetic field is detected, and the peak analog output of the sensor is stored and compared to a reference after the sensor passes the magnet. The sensors are normally tested whenever the vehicle is initially powered up or after the vehicle has been stopped for a predetermined time. |

| Title: | System And Method For Performing Mobile Robotic Work Operations |
| Family: | Patent family and legal status for 5,974,348 |
| Inventor(s): | Rocks, James K. (Leesburg, VA) |
| Application Number: | 08/766,486 |
| Abstract: | A precise automated work system and method is provided. One or more self-navigating robots can perform automated work operations with precision given six degrees of freedom in a undulating, sloping or irregular terrain, such as, a commercial truck garden. A self-propelled robot moves through the garden and performs gardening tasks following a specified course by dead-reckoning and periodically determining its position and orientation by a navigation fix. At least seven navigation beacons are positioned around a perimeter of a garden work area. Each beacon emits electromagnetic radiation across the garden for detection by the self-propelled robot. A panoramic image collector gathers and focuses electromagnetic radiation from each navigation beacon on an electronic camera to form at least seven beam spots. The relative position of the detected beam spots in the focal plane vary depending upon the six degrees of freedom for robot movement in a garden: the robot's three-dimensional position (x,y,z) and the robot's orientation (heading, pitch, and roll). A navigation module determines the position and orientation of the robot within the garden based on the output of the imaging camera. A self-propelled gardening robot performs many varied automated farming tasks from tillage, to planting, to harvesting by controlling the point of impact of a implement carried by a robot with precision, that is, to within an inch on average for any given position coordinate. Commercial feasibility of small truck gardens is improved as automation is comprehensive and accessible to the solitary farmer. |

| Title: | Automated Lawn Mower |
| Family: | Patent family and legal status for 5,974,347 |
| Inventor(s): | Nelson, Russell G. (Cane Hill, AR) |
| Application Number: | 08/818,304 |
| Abstract: | An improved automated, self propelled lawn mower (14) utilizing a rotating directional loop antenna (36) that determines its position within the cutting area by measuring the angle between transmitters(20A, B, & C) placed in a known configuration beyond the cutting area, and by calculating the solution of simultaneous circle equations (96 & 98) defined by that configuration. Orientation is determined by comparing present and previous positions. Stored path information is compared with the calculated position to determine steering signals which direct the mower to move directly toward the next point in the desired path. When the mower reaches that point the next coordinates are retrieved from memory and the process is repeated similarly for all successive points in the path. The simplicity of programming the path makes this automated lawn mower very versatile and flexible. |

| Abstract: | A driver emulative vehicle control system for use with a vehicle. The vehicle control system includes a video camera which transduces the field of view into a plurality of scan lines each comprising a plurality of pixels. A digitizer serves to digitize the frames from the video camera. A computer inputs the digitized frames and processes the same to control the steering, acceleration, deceleration, and braking of the vehicle. More particularly, the processing means includes addressing means, steering control processing means, and speed control processing means. The addressing means serves to map the digitized frames into a mapping memory which is read by the steering control processing means and the speed control processing means. With reference to a lane stripe or stripes in the field of view, the steering control processing means determines the location of the vehicle and generates a steering control signal corresponding thereto. A steering control means receives the steering control signals and controls the steering shaft of the vehicle in accordance therewith. The speed control processing means determines the presence and location of a leading vehicle in the lane and generates speed control signals corresponding thereto. A speed control means serves to receive the speed control signals and to control the throttle control and/or brake of the vehicle. Methods for automatically controlling the steering as well as the acceleration, deceleration and braking of a vehicle are also disclosed. |

| Abstract: | A system for generating a path allows a vehicle to traverse a predetermined route. The system stores route data for the predetermined route. The route data identifies a series of contiguous path segments that form the predetermined route. The route data also identifies a series of nodes located at the beginning and the end of the predetermined route and between adjacent path segments. Each path segment represents a series of postures along the predetermined route. Each posture identifies a position, a heading, and a curvature for the vehicle at a particular point along the predetermined route. The system stores the path segments and nodes as compressed path data. In one embodiment, the compressed path data is a function that is continuous in posture, i.e., continuous in position, heading and curvature. The system retrieves the compressed path data and generates a series of postures from the retrieved compressed path data to allow the vehicle to traverse the predetermined route. |

| Abstract: | An apparatus for guiding the traveling of a moving body along a predetermined traveling path with a high degree of accuracy by accurately and reliably determining a corrected position and a corrected traveling direction of the moving body. A moving distance of the moving body between points of reception of light beams is obtained by a counter, and a CPU calculates a corrected position of the moving body by using an angle formed by the projecting directions of the light beams, the position of installation of a reflecting mirror, and an estimated traveling direction obtained on the basis of an output of a rate gyro. A corrected traveling direction is then calculated by using the corrected position thus calculated. The corrected position is calculated by using the traveling direction thus estimatively calculated. Since it is not necessary to directly determine the traveling direction, only two sets of devices for projecting and receiving the light beams are required, and only one device for reflecting the light is required, thereby improving the reliability of the apparatus. |

| Abstract: | A vehicle primarily for unmanned operation is equipped with a video camera pointed up, and progressively records in an on-board computer memory the observed locations of points derived from overhead features such as pre-existing overhead lights in a building during a manually driven teaching mode trip along a desired course. On subsequent unmanned trips, the vehicle directs itself along the chosen course by again observing the overhead features, deriving points from them and comparing the locations of those points to the locations of the points that were recorded during the teaching mode trip. It then corrects its steering to bring the errors between the observed locations and the recorded locations to zero, thereby directing the vehicle to automatically follow the course that was followed during the teaching mode trip. |

| Title: | Vehicle Remote Guidance With Path Control |
| Family: | Patent family and legal status for 5,155,683 |
| Inventor(s): | Rahim, Wadiatur (Severna Park, MD) |
| Application Number: | 07/683,706 |
| Abstract: | In a remotely piloted surface vehicle a television camera is used to send images to a screen on the operator's station. A computer displays the vehicle's intended path on the screen. The path appears as a computer-generated line superimposed on the image of the vehicle's environment, like a stripe painted on the ground. The operator can change or advance the path on the screen with a cursor control. A computer picks certain discrete screen points along the line and maps those screen positions onto ground positions called "waypoints". These are sent to the vehicle's guidance system to direct the vehicle along a path through the waypoints. The transform which maps the screen path onto the ground path depends on the camera orientation and lens. The transform parameters can be adjusted as the camera zooms, pans and tilts. Each time the screen is refreshed, the path line for that screen is calculated by the computer from the ground path, to present the ground path correctly in the new screen. The operator can extend or modify the path at will. The system is especially adapted to use in cases where a narrow bandwidth of the radio link between the camera and the station limits the screen refresh rate. The system maximizes the possible speed of the vehicle by presenting the path information in a format quickly grasped by the operator. |

| Abstract: | An unmanned, self-propelled vehicle in the nature of a mobile robot has an on-board computer that stores path and machine function instructions and activates the drive and steering systems so as to cause the machine to follow a desired path. A plurality of retroreflective targets are mounted along the desired path. They do not have to be mounted at a specific height or distance apart, nor need they be square to the path. An improved guidance system for keeping the vehicle on the prescribed path includes a laterally scanning laser transmitter-receiver mounted on the vehicle. An electromechanical tracking device controls the angle of elevation of the laser beam so as to keep it aimed at each target successively as the vehicle moves. The laser produces signals which steer the vehicle such that the laser transmitter and targets are kept aligned in a vertical plane. A positioning device can move the laser transmitter transversely on the vehicle so that the vehicle centerline may travel in the vertical plane of the laser or may travel in an offset line parallel to the vertical laser plane. Certain ones of the targets are bar coded and a target counter senses and counts them as the machine moves past them to keep track of where the vehicle is located along its desired path. A motion sensing system using reflective microwave sensors provides speed and distance information. |

| Family: | Patent family and legal status for 4,361,202 |
| Inventor(s): | Minovitch, Michael (Los Angeles, CA) |
| Application Number: | 06/048,715 |
| Abstract: | An automated transportation system for vehicular travel along a roadway is presented. The roadway can be any hard surface that contains an embedded metallic guiderail along its center. A proximity transducer (metal detector) installed under the vehicle, senses the metallic guiderail and sends steering commands to the vehicle's steering actuators to keep the vehicle moving in the center of the roadway directly over the guiderail. Transponders are embedded along the guiderail at selected points for automatic roadway identification, position determination and automatic speed, headway and route selection and automatic traffic control. The system also provides automatic branching and lane changing. The vehicle's control system includes sensors, signal processors, a microprocessor and various power actuators that are connected to the vehicle's steering, braking and accelerator systems. An on-board collision avoidance system using sonic or radar detection means is also provided. The vehicle can be programmed to automatically follow a pre-selected route by inserting route instructions into the microprocessor's memory where it can be retrieved and used any number of times. Magnetometer sensors are also embedded along the roadway to detect the presence and speed of all vehicles, thereby allowing ordinary, manually-controlled vehicles to use the same roadways as the automatically controlled vehicles for a mixed traffic flow. The guiderails and transponders can be embedded in essentially all existing streets and highways to provide an economical comprehensive fully automated road transportation system for private and commercial vehicles. |
